Total Hip Replacement

Total Hip Replacement

Hip pain can quietly shrink your world: walking becomes a chore, sleep is disrupted, and everyday activities start to feel out of reach. If arthritis or joint damage is stopping you from living comfortably, total hip replacement treatment may help you regain movement and confidence. At Northampton Hip and Knee Clinic, you can access a clear, consultant-led pathway designed around you: careful diagnosis, honest options (including non-surgical care when appropriate), and a recovery plan you can understand.

Hip replacement prosthesis - Surgery

What is total hip replacement surgery?

It’s an operation where the worn or damaged surfaces of the hip joint are replaced with artificial components so the joint can move smoothly again. In a standard hip replacement, both the “ball” and the “socket” are replaced. The aim is straightforward: reduce pain, improve mobility, and help you return to normal daily life, often making activities like walking, sitting, and driving more comfortable again. Your quality of life is vastly improved.

Who may benefit from total hip replacement treatment?

You may be considering a total hip replacement if you have hip pain and stiffness that:

  • persists despite medication, physiotherapy, or injections
  • affects sleep, walking distance, work, or independence
  • is linked to arthritis or joint degeneration on imaging

Importantly, surgery is typically approached as a last resort, once other suitable options have been explored. That “right time” decision is made with you, based on symptoms, function, and goals—not pressure

Why do patients choose a consultant-led clinic approach?

When you’re considering joint replacement, what matters most is not buzzwords; it’s feeling listened to, understanding your options, and having support after treatment. The clinical environment should provide more than just technical expertise; it must offer a partnership. Patients choose the expertise of Mr Nasr and his team because they prioritise feeling heard, understanding their options, and knowing they won’t be left without a safety net during recovery.

The clinic positions its care around:

  • Through a thorough assessment. We combine physical examinations and medical history with advanced diagnostics (MRI/3D CT) to ensure your diagnosis is as precise as the surgical plan itself.
  • Clear communication. We trade jargon for honest dialogue, explaining all surgical and non-operative options so you can make an informed decision that fits your lifestyle.
  • Bespoke aftercare. Your recovery is managed through a personalised roadmap with direct access to your consultant, ensuring every postoperative milestone is safely met.

Hip Replacement Surgery Process

Preparation & Pre-hab Before surgery

  • You will undergo a clinical health pre-assessment check and “pre-hab” to strengthen the muscles surrounding the joint.
  • This stage focuses on optimising your health and preparing your home environment.
  • This is to ensure the smoothest possible transition post-surgery.

The Surgical Procedure

  • Using advanced, computer-assisted techniques.
  • The surgeon replaces the damaged joint with a durable implant made of ceramic, metal, or high-density polyethene.
  • The procedure uses minimally invasive approaches to prioritise precision.
  • Induces joint longevity and reduces tissue trauma.

Recovery & Enhanced Mobilisation

  • Recovery starts on Day 0, with many patients walking within hours of the operation.
  • Following an “Enhanced Recovery Protocol”, you will progress from walking aids to independent movement.
  • This will help in returning to driving and light activities within six weeks.

    Common Questions & Concerns

    1. How long does a total hip replacement take?

The procedure typically lasts 60 minutes. However, your overall “hospital day” includes more than the operation itself (preparation, anaesthetic, recovery room time, and early mobilisation), so the team will guide you on what to expect for your specific plan.

    2. What happens on the day of total hip replacement surgery?

Your experience should feel predictable, not mysterious. Key steps described by the clinic include:

    • You’ll receive instructions on eating/drinking beforehand (often nothing after early morning).
    • The surgeon reviews consent and marks the correct side.
    • Anaesthetic options are discussed: general anaesthetic (asleep) or spinal anaesthetic (numb from the waist down), with sedation available if you prefer to sleep.

    3. What happens immediately after the surgery?

You will start moving within hours of the operation, supported by the physiotherapy team. You’ll be monitored, pain relief is provided, and checks such as X-rays and blood tests will be used to confirm early progress.

    4. How long is the hospital stay?

Many patients can go home after 1 night, rarely 2 nights, depending on their situation and progress. Day case hip replacements will go home the same day.

    5. What is the recovery timeline of a total hip replacement surgery?

While everyone heals differently, the clinic notes:

    • The arthritic pain is gone immediately
    • Surgical discomfort typically settles over a few weeks
    • By around six weeks most people can drive again
