Hip Resurfacing Surgery

Hip Resurfacing Surgery

Hip pain doesn’t just affect movement; it changes how you live. Activities you once took for granted, like walking, exercising, and even tying your shoes, can start to feel frustrating or impossible. For some people, especially those who are active and younger, hip resurfacing surgery may be an effective alternative to a full hip replacement. At Northampton Hip & Knee Clinic, hip resurfacing is offered through a clear, consultant-led process that focuses on understanding your goals, explaining your options in plain language, and helping you make the right decision for your long-term mobility, not rushing you into surgery.

ReCerf® Ceramic Hip Resurfacing

What is hip resurfacing?

If you’re wondering what hip resurfacing is, it’s a type of hip joint resurfacing surgery that preserves more of your natural bone compared to a total hip replacement. Instead of removing the entire femoral head (the “ball” of the joint), the surgeon carefully reshapes it and places a smooth metal or ceramic cap over it. The socket is also lined with a durable metal or ceramic surface. The goal is to restore smooth movement, alleviate pain, and preserve the natural structure of your hip as much as possible. Hip resurfacing is not suitable for everyone, but for the right patient, it can offer excellent stability, a more natural joint feel, and long-term durability.

Who may benefit from hip resurfacing surgery?

You may be considered for hip resurfacing if:

  • Persists despite physiotherapy, medication, or injections
  • Limits walking, exercise, work, or quality of life
  • This is caused by arthritis or joint damage seen on imaging
  • You wish to remain extremely active and are involved with jobs or pursuits that have a higher chance of a dislocation of a traditional hip replacement. This may be patients that play sport or run long distances. Jobs that involve bending, twisting and squatting.

Hip resurfacing is most often considered for younger, active patients with good bone quality. Importantly, surgery is never treated as a default option. The decision is made with you, after carefully weighing non-surgical treatments and discussing whether resurfacing or hip replacement is more appropriate.

Why do patients choose a consultant-led clinic approach?

When you’re considering joint replacement, what matters most is not buzzwords; it’s feeling listened to, understanding your options, and having support after treatment. The clinical environment should provide more than just technical expertise; it must offer a partnership. Patients choose the expertise of Mr Nasr and his team because they prioritise feeling heard, understanding their options, and knowing they won’t be left without a safety net during recovery.

The clinic positions its care around:

  • Through a thorough assessment. We combine physical examinations and medical history with advanced diagnostics (MRI/3D CT) to ensure your diagnosis is as precise as the surgical plan itself.
  • Clear communication. We trade jargon for honest dialogue, explaining all surgical and non-operative options so you can make an informed decision that fits your lifestyle.
  • Bespoke aftercare. Your recovery is managed through a personalised roadmap with direct access to your consultant, ensuring every postoperative milestone is safely met.

Hip resurfacing vs hip replacement: what’s the difference?

A common question is hip resurfacing vs hip replacement. The key difference lies in how much bone is preserved.

FeatureHip ResurfacingTotal Hip Replacement
Bone PreservationHigh: Keeps the femoral head.Lower: Removes the femoral head.
Ideal PatientYounger, active, strong bone density.Older patients or those with bone thinning.
Joint FeelCan feel more “natural” in sports.Stable and reliable for daily life.
Future SurgeryEasier to revise later if needed.Revision is more complex.

Mr Nasr and his expert team will explain both options clearly, helping you understand which approach fits your anatomy, lifestyle, and long-term needs, without pressure.

Why patients value a consultant-led clinic approach

Choosing surgery isn’t just about the operation; it’s about trust, understanding, and support. Patients considering hip resurfacing often want clear answers and honest guidance, not sales language.

ReCerf® Ceramic Hip Resurfacing

A Next-Generation, Metal-Free Resurfacing Option**

ReCerf represents the first all-ceramic hip resurfacing system, a major step forward for patients who want the benefits of resurfacing without metal-on-metal bearings. This system uses advanced ceramic surfaces, designed to reduce wear, avoid metal ion exposure, and extend implant longevity.

Benefits of ReCerf include:

  • No metal-on-metal articulation
  • Extremely low wear rates
  • Bone preservation similar to traditional resurfacing
  • A potential long-term option for younger patients

It is particularly attractive for patients who previously would have been excellent resurfacing candidates but preferred to avoid metal bearings. It is also suitable for young active women who are unable to have the metal on metal articulation

Hip resurfacing recovery time: what to expect

Recovery varies between individuals, but patients often want clarity about hip resurfacing recovery time. In general:

  • Arthritic pain is typically relieved immediately
  • Surgical soreness settles over the first few weeks.
  • Hip resurfacing patients may be more sore for a few more weeks due to the surgical exposure.
  • Walking improves steadily with physiotherapy
  • Many people return to driving and desk-based work by six weeks.
  • Higher-impact activities are reintroduced gradually under guidance

Mr Nasr will give you realistic expectations based on your health, activity level, and goals.

How long does hip resurfacing last?

A key question is how long hip resurfacing lasts. For suitable patients, modern hip resurfacing implants have shown excellent long-term outcomes, often lasting 15–20 years or more. Longevity depends on factors such as activity level, bone quality, implant positioning, and following rehabilitation advice.

This is discussed openly during consultation so you can weigh long-term considerations with confidence.

Is hip resurfacing right for you?

If hip pain is holding you back, a consultation can help you understand:

  • What’s causing your symptoms
  • Whether non-surgical treatments are still appropriate
  • Whether hip resurfacing surgery is suitable for your hip and lifestyle
  • What your recovery could realistically involve

You don’t have to decide today, but you do deserve clear answers.

I had a knee replacement surgery at Three Shires. The care I received was excellent, all the staff were friendly and made me feel at ease. The surgery went well , Mr Nasr and Mr Tanner were both welcoming and explained everything to me and made sure that I understood what was going to be done, even the after care was excellent. My time in Three Shires was very relaxing and the staff were there for you anytime night or day. I would highly recommend going there for your treatment.

I had absolutely wonderful care at Three Shires hospital in Northampton and great recoveries from two total knee replacements carried out by Mr Pierre Nasr. Mr Howard Tanner followed up on my care after the operations and was extremely professional and personable. Many thanks to all.

Had a TKR at Three Shires Hospital on 7/11/25. Right from the very begining I was told what would happen and how it would feel. I had a nerve block, and the lovely anesthetist said he would also give me sedation. I can remember going into the pre-op room, the next I remember was waking up in recovery. I can highly recommend this hospital, was really looked after. I went in as an NHS patient in a private hospital. Due to have the other knee done soon.Thank you.

On entering the reception it was well light and very cleen. The receptionist was very polite and directed me to were i needed to be. The dowas on time.well managed And explain everything in detail that need to be done. Escorted me to the x-ray department. Then when x-ray was sent to his computer.he proceeded to point out the problem things and explain what the next step should be. Common Questions & Concerns

    1. Is hip resurfacing surgery suitable for everyone?

No. Hip resurfacing is best suited to younger, active patients with good bone quality. It may not be recommended if you have weak bones, osteoporosis, significant deformity, or certain medical conditions. Your consultant will assess your hip carefully and explain whether resurfacing or another treatment is more appropriate for you.

    2. How long does hip resurfacing surgery take?

The operation itself usually takes around 60–90 minutes. However, your hospital stay includes preparation, anaesthetic time, and early recovery, so your consultant will guide you through what to expect on the day.

    3. How painful is recovery after hip resurfacing?

Most patients describe post-surgical discomfort rather than severe pain. Pain relief is provided, and discomfort typically improves steadily over the first few weeks. Many people find the arthritic pain they had before surgery is gone immediately. Hip resurfacing may be a little more uncomfortable in the initial few months than a total hip replacement due to the techniques involved in the surgery.

    4. When can I return to normal activities after hip resurfacing?

Many patients begin walking on the same day as surgery. Driving and desk-based work are often possible by around six weeks, depending on progress. Higher-impact activities are reintroduced gradually with your consultant’s guidance.

    5. Will I need a hip replacement in the future after resurfacing?

Hip resurfacing implants are designed to last many years, often 15–20 years or longer in suitable patients. If further surgery is ever needed, having preserved more natural bone can make future treatment more straightforward.
